Stanford's 2026 AI Index reports that generative AI reached roughly 53 percent adoption within three years, faster than either the personal computer or the internet. Organizational AI adoption reached 88 percent, and four out of five university students now use generative AI.
We aren't witnessing a niche technological transition.
We are watching a new cognitive infrastructure form.
But friction isn't always the enemy.
Sometimes friction is where learning occurs.
Struggling with a sentence teaches you how to write.
Getting lost teaches you geography.
Arguing through an idea teaches you what you believe.
Making mistakes teaches judgment.
Waiting teaches patience.
Practicing teaches skill.
Failure teaches humility.
Technology has traditionally helped us perform difficult tasks.

You can be surrounded by infinite connection and still feel alone.
Social media proved that connectivity and intimacy aren't the same thing.
AI may test that proposition at an entirely new level.
For the first time, humans can interact with software that responds conversationally, remembers preferences, adapts its personality and can simulate empathy, affection and companionship.
The consequences are only beginning to emerge.
Common Sense Media reported in 2025 that nearly three in four teens surveyed had used AI companions, with roughly half using them regularly. A third said they had chosen AI companions rather than humans for serious conversations.
Its broader 2026 survey found that 86 percent of children ages 9 to 17 were using AI in some form, with nearly a quarter using it daily.
This doesn't mean AI companionship is inherently dystopian.
But it creates a question that Everything Now almost seems to anticipate:
What happens when even human presence becomes something we can simulate on demand?
In 2017, loneliness existed despite unlimited digital connection.
In 2026, technology increasingly offers to solve loneliness by manufacturing the experience of connection.
That may help some people.

The danger is that humans may gradually prefer relationships designed without the inconvenient parts of humanity.
We Are Also Automating Reality
Then there is the question of authenticity.
In 2017, the internet's great problem was information overload.
In 2026, it is increasingly epistemic overload.
Not:
What should I read?
But:
What is real?
AI can produce convincing voices, photographs, articles, personalities, advertisements and video.
And this changes the economics of deception.
Creating believable false material used to require skill, money and time.
Those costs are collapsing.
The response is already visible in efforts such as the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity, which is developing technical standards for documenting the source and history of digital media.
That fact alone tells us something profound about where we have arrived.
We are beginning to build infrastructure whose purpose is not merely to tell us what something is.
It must tell us whether something actually happened.
The internet promised access to the world's knowledge.
The AI internet may require a parallel system devoted to proving the provenance of reality.

Chips.
Servers.
Cooling systems.

Our demand for unlimited digital abundance is beginning to reshape electrical grids, industrial investment and national energy policy.

There is no cloud.

Everything has a cost.
Even infinity.
The Real Problem Isn't AI
It would be easy to turn this argument into another warning that artificial intelligence is destroying civilization.
That would miss the point.
AI is one of the most remarkable technologies humans have ever created.
It can accelerate drug discovery.
Translate languages.
Help disabled people communicate.
Assist scientists.
Tutor students.
Automate bureaucratic drudgery.
Help entrepreneurs build companies.
Give a single creative person capabilities that once required an entire studio.
The problem isn't intelligence.
The problem is what happens when intelligence is inserted into an economic system already optimized for endless consumption, engagement and growth.

Your search results.
Your political explanations.
Your artificial friends.

Not mass media.

For a century, people argued about what television was doing to culture.
At least everyone was watching the same television.
The AI age introduces something stranger: billions of individually generated information environments optimized around individual preferences.
That could be wonderfully empowering.
It could also weaken one of the quiet foundations of civilization:
shared experience.
Democracy, culture and community require disagreement.
But before people can disagree, they need some common conception of what they're disagreeing about.
A society in which every person inhabits a personalized informational universe may have unprecedented access to information while possessing less shared reality.
That would be the ultimate fulfillment of Everything Now.
Everyone gets everything.
And everyone gets it alone.
The Great Paradox of Abundance
This brings us back to Arcade Fire.
The song's deepest insight wasn't really about consumerism.
It was about desire.
Technology repeatedly promises that the next layer of abundance will finally satisfy us.
More products.
More information.
More entertainment.
More connection.
More personalization.
More intelligence.
But human desire doesn't operate like a storage tank.
You don't fill it and become permanently satisfied.
The baseline moves.
Yesterday's miracle becomes today's feature.
Today's luxury becomes tomorrow's expectation.
The first smartphone felt miraculous.

If current incentives remain unchanged, I suspect the next decade will produce a strange bifurcation.
One layer of civilization will become overwhelmingly synthetic.
AI-generated entertainment.
AI-generated advertising.
AI-generated influencers.
AI-written commercial content.
AI customer service.
AI tutors.
AI salespeople.
AI coworkers.
AI companions.
AI agents negotiating with other AI agents.
Much of this will be useful, productive and ordinary.
But alongside it, another economy may emerge based precisely on the things automation cannot easily manufacture:
verified human presence, trusted identity, physical experiences, real communities, craftsmanship, provenance and attention from another actual person.
We may eventually pay premiums not for things created faster, but for things we know were created slowly.
Not because AI failed.
Because it succeeded.
When artificial abundance becomes universal, scarcity becomes valuable again.
The Choice We Still Have
The future described here isn't inevitable.
Artificial intelligence doesn't decide what kind of civilization we build around it.
We do.
We can design AI to extend human agency rather than gradually replace it.
We can teach children to use AI without surrendering the cognitive struggle that develops judgment.
We can demand provenance without criminalizing creativity.
We can build businesses around outcomes instead of addiction.
We can preserve spaces where efficiency isn't the highest value.
We can deliberately protect human relationships from becoming another market optimized by algorithms.
We can choose when friction is waste and when friction is meaningful.
Most importantly, we can stop confusing more capability with more humanity.
Nine years ago, Arcade Fire asked us to consider what happens when we can have everything now.
We answered by building machines capable of giving us even more.

The technological achievement is astonishing.
