Get Found: How to Be the Answer, Not the Ninth Blue Link

Getting found now means two separate jobs. Search puts your page in a list and lets the reader choose. AI answer engines write one answer and cite a handful of sources — and if you are not one of them, you were not beaten, you were skipped. This section covers both: earning the citation, and having something worth citing when you get it.

TL;DR

  • What changed: Ranking and being cited are different outcomes with different work behind them. A page can rank well and never appear in an AI answer.
  • The two halves: Structure so a machine can extract you. Write something a human would actually quote.
  • The order: Fix what your pages say before you chase where they appear. Distribution multiplies whatever is already there — including nothing.
  • Bottom line: You cannot be cited for a claim you never made clearly.

The uncomfortable part

Somebody who needed exactly what you sell asked an AI assistant this week. They got a clean, confident, well-organised answer. Three companies were named in it. You were not one of them — and here is the part that stings: you will never see that in your analytics. There is no bounce, no impression, no lost-deal notification. The search that would have become your best customer this quarter simply resolved without you.

That is a different kind of invisible than page two of Google. Page two at least leaves a footprint. This leaves nothing at all, which is why so many businesses with genuinely good pages are quietly losing ground and cannot point to when it started.

What's inside this section

Get Found by AI is the visibility half — generative engine optimisation, answer-engine structure, what changed when AI Overviews landed on the results page, how to tell whether you are being cited at all, and what to do about a local listing that gets suspended. This is the plumbing: the work that makes a page eligible to be quoted.

Content & Brand is the substance half — brand voice you can actually check, video and short-form that earns attention, podcasts, sound, visuals, sponsorship, and how to keep AI-assisted writing from reading like everyone else's. Eligibility gets you considered. This is what gets you chosen.

How to use this section

  1. Find out where you actually stand. Not where you assume. Ask the engines your own buyer's questions and write down who gets named.
  2. Fix the extractability before the volume. A direct answer near the top, a real question as a heading, and a claim a machine can lift without guessing.
  3. Then make it worth lifting. A specific number, a named tradeoff, an opinion you would defend. Generic pages are technically eligible and practically ignored.
  4. Re-check on a cadence. Answer engines change what they surface. A citation is a position, not a possession.

The honest line: nobody can guarantee an AI citation, and anyone who does is selling you something they cannot deliver. Answer engines are not a ranking you buy your way into. What you can control is whether your page is eligible — clear, structured, specific, and genuinely useful. That is the whole job, and it is entirely doable.

FAQ

What does it mean to "get found by AI"?

It means being named or quoted inside the answer an AI assistant writes, rather than appearing in a list of links the user has to click. The reader may never see a results page at all, so a citation inside the answer is the visibility that matters.

Is GEO different from SEO?

Yes. SEO optimises for placement in a ranked list, where the user picks the winner. GEO optimises for being cited inside a single generated answer, where the engine picks. Good SEO helps you get retrieved, but retrieval is not citation — the two need different work.

If I already rank on Google, will AI engines cite me too?

Not automatically. Ranking well makes you more likely to be retrieved, but what gets quoted is the passage a model can extract cleanly and trust. A page can rank near the top and still be skipped because its answer is buried, hedged, or spread across six paragraphs.

How do I know whether AI is citing my brand?

Ask the engines the questions your buyers actually ask, in the words they use, and record which sources get named. Do it on a schedule and track the change. There is no impressions dashboard for this yet, so a repeatable manual check is the honest measurement.

Does brand voice matter if a machine is reading the page?

It matters more, not less. AI-assisted writing pushes everyone toward the same neutral middle, so a specific, checkable voice is one of the few things that still distinguishes one page from ten others covering the same topic. Machines extract the claim; humans decide whether to trust the source.

Where should I start if I only have a few hours?

Start with your five highest-intent pages. Put a direct one-paragraph answer near the top of each, turn the vague headings into the questions people actually type, and cut any claim you cannot support. That is the cheapest work with the largest effect on eligibility.
